Matthew Schmidt is a Mentor and Assistant Professor at SUNY Empire State College, and teaches at Stony Brook University and Suffolk County Community College as well. His interest in science dates back to his childhood, when he became interested in astronomy, evolution, and ecology. After receiving his B.S. in Environmental and Forest Biology from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in 1987, he decided that Molecular Biology was his greatest interest, and obtained his Ph. D. in Genetics from Stony Brook University in 1995.
Since then, Dr. Schmidt has made teaching his primary interest and passion. He directs and has designed a wide variety of courses in the Life Sciences, and recieved the "Excellence in Part-Time Mentoring" award at Empire State College as well as the "President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching" at Stony Brook. He has also published a variety of books and articles. Currently his main interests lie in Microbiology, Evolution, and... pretty much everything else!
